Ready-made pizza dough balls let you make pizzeria-style pizza at home without mixing, kneading or proving. Each 250g ball makes one 12-inch pizza, and a pizza kit adds the sauce, cheese and toppings so everything arrives together.
This guide explains the difference between Neapolitan, sourdough and gluten-free dough, how to defrost and stretch it, which oven to use, and which pizza kit suits you. Our Neapolitan and sourdough dough balls are made with Caputo 00 flour, our gluten-free dough is certified safe by Coeliac UK, and everything is delivered chilled across the UK. Both our Neapolitan and sourdough doughs won Great Taste awards in 2025.
What are pizza dough balls?
A pizza dough ball is a pre-portioned, ready-to-stretch piece of pizza dough. The mixing, kneading and fermenting are already done, so you only need to defrost it, stretch it and add toppings.
Ours weigh 250g each, the standard size for one 12-inch pizza. They come in packs of 12, 24, 36 or 50, and freeze for up to 3 months, so you can keep a supply ready for pizza night.
Neapolitan vs sourdough vs gluten-free pizza dough
Choose Neapolitan for a soft, pillowy crust, sourdough for a thinner, crispier base with a gentle tang, and gluten-free if you’re coeliac or avoiding gluten.
| Neapolitan | Sourdough | Gluten-free | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crust | Soft, pillowy, leopard-spotted char | Thin, crispy, light and airy | Crispy, golden, tender inside |
| Flavour | Classic, clean | Gentle sourdough tang | Mild |

How to use frozen pizza dough balls
Defrost the dough in the fridge overnight, let it reach room temperature for 1–2 hours, then stretch, top and bake. Once defrosted, use it within a few hours.
- Defrost overnight. Move the dough balls you need from the freezer to the fridge the night before.
- Bring to room temperature. Take them out of the fridge 1–2 hours before cooking. Warm dough stretches thin without tearing.
- Stretch. Press from the centre outwards with your fingertips, leaving a slightly thicker edge for the crust.
- Top. Spread a thin layer of sauce, add torn mozzarella and your toppings. Less is more – too much weighs the base down.
- Bake. Cook in a pizza oven or your home oven at its highest setting until the crust is golden and the cheese is bubbling.
Keep any dough balls you won’t use within a few hours in the freezer, where they last up to 3 months.
Which oven? Pizza ovens vs home ovens
Our dough works in any oven. A dedicated pizza oven gives the most authentic result, but a home oven turned to its maximum temperature makes excellent pizza too.
- Pizza ovens (Ooni, Gozney, Roccbox): Their very high heat cooks pizza in minutes and creates the classic leopard-spotted Neapolitan crust.
- Home ovens: Preheat to the highest setting. A preheated pizza stone or steel helps crisp the base.
If you cook in an outdoor pizza oven, our handmade 14-inch wooden pizza board gives you a dedicated surface for slicing and serving.
Pizza kits compared: which one should you choose?
Pick the Margherita or Double Pepperoni kit for two people, the Family kit for four, and the Starter Kit if you want 12 dough balls for parties or the freezer.
| Kit | Pizzas | What’s included | Dough choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Margherita Pizza Kit | 2 | 2 dough balls, Mutti pizza sauce (400g), Fior di Latte mozzarella, fresh basil | Neapolitan, sourdough or gluten-free |
| Double Pepperoni Pizza Kit | 2 | 2 dough balls, Mutti pizza sauce (400g), Fior di Latte mozzarella, sliced pepperoni | Neapolitan, sourdough or gluten-free |
| Family Pizza Night Kit | 4 | 4 dough balls, 2 tins of Mutti sauce, 2 packs of mozzarella, sliced pepperoni | Neapolitan, sourdough or gluten-free |
| Pizza Dough Starter Kit | 12 | 12 Neapolitan dough balls, 2 tins of Mutti sauce, 2 packs of mozzarella | Neapolitan |
The Double Pepperoni kit is also available in Prosecco and wine bundles for two.
Short on time? Our Napoli pizza bases are already stretched and stone-baked. Top them straight from frozen and bake for 8–10 minutes.
Toppings and finishing touches
The best homemade pizzas use a few good ingredients, sparingly. Overloading is the most common reason a base turns soggy.
- Sauce: Spread a thin layer – roughly 2–3 tablespoons for a 12-inch pizza – and leave a border for the crust. A good tinned Italian tomato sauce, such as Mutti, is all you need.
- Cheese: Tear mozzarella into small pieces and pat it dry so it doesn’t release water onto the base. Fior di Latte is the classic Neapolitan choice.
- Toppings: Two or three toppings is plenty. Cured meats such as pepperoni can go on before baking.
- After baking: Add delicate toppings like prosciutto, fresh basil or rocket once the pizza is out of the oven, then finish with a drizzle of hot honey, chilli oil or truffle oil.
How to tell when your pizza is done
A pizza is ready when the crust is puffed and golden with a few darker spots, the cheese is fully melted and bubbling, and the base is firm enough to lift without flopping.
- In a pizza oven: It cooks very quickly, so turn the pizza regularly for an even bake and watch it closely.
- In a home oven: It takes a few minutes longer. If the top is done before the base, move the pizza lower in the oven or use a preheated pizza stone or steel.
- Check the base: Lift an edge with a peel or spatula – it should be golden and crisp underneath.
